SNAP benefits have been credited as "one of the most effective policies" to address Food insecurity in the United States of America. In November 2025, we learned how many of our neighbors and community members not only depend on SNAP, but it allows for the support of other food program and measures not only in the Rochester community, but within New York State. You can read more about it here!
Although this program has been noted as extremely effective, it is not accessible to every one that applies. And one vulnerable populations are college students.
Due to them being in a 4-year or more gap of limbo of financial and career security, College students can be in a space of insecurity with their careers, finances, and food. Although Colleges can feel like mini-utopias, it is important to note that even there, money needs to be exchanged for food. In number terms this is more impactful than we realize, at Syracuse University, an "unlimited orange plan" can cost $4,060 with unlimited meal dollars for $330 per semester ($8,120 and $660 with a total of $8780 for two semester).
This in between financial and career status, also increase instability for graduate student and post-doctoral students are not immune to food insecurity with a 17.4% graduate students and 12% post-doctoral students report not having enough to eat for the semester. Although this is about half of the status for undergraduate students (which remains at 30%), its important to note that undergraduate and graduate students can come from all different backgrounds. As an adjunct professor, I have taught single mothers of 3, the young first-generation college student, or the "third times" the charm returning student. College is hard; but being hungry makes it harder.
Good News!
There is time to contact your assembly member, NY Senator, and Hochul about this measure!
